Ricky picks up Rookie of the Race Award and Second Top Ten

The race at Bristol Motor Speedway is quickly becoming a must attend event on the USAR schedule.  The race is a companion event with the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and draws the largest crowd the USAR teams will see all year.  This year was no different with an estimated 65,000 fans in attendance to see an action packed race at the “World’s Fastest Half-Mile”.

Ricky Turner entered the event hoping to gain experience and track time at the famed half mile.  The day was fairly uneventful as practice went by with the Turner Motorsports team making numerous adjustments to the Williams Bros. Lumber Company Chevrolet in hopes of taking one of the 36 starting spots.  Ricky was able to get the Williams Bros. Lumber car in the show qualifying in the 28th position.

With the Williams Bros. Lumber Company Chevrolet rolling off the starting grid in the 28th position, Ricky had one major goal on his mind…bring the car home in one piece.  The fast pace of Bristol Motor Speedway wreaks havoc on equipment, as many competitors would find out before the checkered flag fell.

As the race got underway, Ricky patiently picked up positions and kept his car damage free.  He reported to his crew that his car was loose entering the turns and over numerous pit stops the team made several adjustments to make the car better.  Ricky was able to avoid all the major wrecks and brought the Williams Bros. Lumber Company Chevrolet home in the 10th position.  This was the best finish for a rookie, which allowed Ricky to grab the Miller Lite Rookie of the Race Award.

Overall, it was a successful race for the Turner Motorsports team.  Another top ten finish, Rookie of the Race award, and the team was able to load up an undamaged car.  With a clean finish at Bristol, Ricky and the Turner Motorsports team will make the trip to USA International Speedway on September 2nd for the Greased Lightning 250.

The Food City 150 from Bristol Motor Speedway can be seen on SPEED Channel Wednesday August 30th, 2006 at 4:00 pm and Friday September 1st, 2006 at 12:00 pm.  Check the USAR website for more air times.
