Ricky Survives to Finish 15th at Southern National Speedway
Ricky Turner rolled into Southern National Speedway looking
to build on his 12th place finish from Hickory.
With the threat of rain looming all day, Ricky and the Turner
Motorsports team kept their fingers crossed that it would stay dry
since a rainout of qualifying would mean the team would be heading
home early.
Practice was fairly uneventful with the team making
numerous adjustments to the Williams Bros. Lumber Company Chevrolet.
Ricky posted the 5th fastest time in the 2-hour
practice session.
With 39 cars gunning for one of the 28 starting spots,
qualifying was once again a major challenge.
Ricky bettered his time from practice, which resulted in a 24th
starting spot for the Sears Auto Center 250.
Just like Hickory, the entire starting field was separated by
only a small margin.
The race got under way with Ricky reporting a tight
condition early on. As he
got some laps on his tires, Ricky was able to start moving toward the
front of the field. Ricky
was able to remain on the lead lap and save his car before a caution on lap
108 brought most of the leaders to pit road for 4 tires and
adjustments. After the
pit stop, Ricky began making his way to the front and moved up to the
11th position by lap 160. Unfortunately,
the night took a wrong turn on lap 168 when Randy Gentry made contact with the
Williams Bros. Lumber Chevrolet sending them both spinning.
The leader was able to pass Ricky and put him a lap down before
he could get going again. Ricky
brought the #27 Chevy down pit road to the attention of his Turner
Motorsports crew to repair the damage.
This put the Turner Motorsports team in a hole that it
couldn’t recover from the rest of the night.
Ricky soldiered on to the checkered flag and salvaged a
respectable 15th place finish in his 2nd career
USAR start, despite the damage to his Williams Bros. Lumber Company
Chevrolet.
The Sears Auto Center 250 from Southern National Speedway
can be seen on Speed Channel Wednesday July 26th at 4:00pm
and Friday July 28th at 12:00pm.
